A soapmaker should ensure the calculation for the ingredients needed for making a bar soap is done accordingly to reduce the waste of ingredients. If you are wondering how you can fill your soap mold without wasting your ingredients then these examples will assist you.

Example 1(rectangular soap mold)
Let say, you want to make 100% bar soap and you have a rectangular bar soap mold with the length 17cm, width 10cm, and the height 6cm. The first step is to calculate the volume of your rectangular mold (L X W X H). After getting the volume of the mold multiply it by 0.40 to get the amount of oil or fat you will use. Insert the volume of fat/oil you obtained in a lye calculator(available online)Lye calculator will give you the exact amount of other ingredients such as the amount of sodium hydroxide to use. However, in this example, we are using only coconut oil and a base (sodium hydroxide).

Volume of the soap mould= 17cm X 10cm x 6cm = 1020cm3
Volume of oils/fat (coconut oil) = 1020cm3 X 0.40= 408cm3 or 408mls

You can change oil volume into ounce before inserting it in lye calculator .

1 US fluid ounce= 2 9.5735 cm3
(408cm3/29.5735cm3)=13.8961 or 14 ounces

 Insert 14 ounces in lye calculator to get the following results shown in the picture.

 In this picture, you will dissolve 70.59 grams (1ounch =28.3495 grams) of sodium hydroxide in approximately 136cm3 or 136mls (you just changing ounces to cm3 and 1cm3= 1ml). From you can follow your normal procedure for making bar soap.

Example 2(round or tube soap molds)
For round/tube molds you will find the area of a circle and then multiply it by the height to give you the volume of the mold.

(Pi) X r2 X h
Let say; you have round soap mold with radius 7cm and the height 10cm. You can calculate the volume as follows:
Pi=3.142 or 22/7
22/7 X 72 X 10= 1540cm3

Multiply this volume by 0.40 to get the volume of oil you should use.

1540 x 0.40=616cm3 and then follow the procedures provided in example 1 to complete your task.

N/B: You can use more than one oil/fat. However, oils/fats volumes must equal to the calculated amount. Lye calculator will assist you to get the percentage of oils/fats that you need to use in your soap.
