Lumax 537.5 SE Herbicide in Kenya

Picture 1: Before Application of Lumax 537.5 (SE)

As several farmers are searching for the best herbicides, there are various herbicides in the Kenyan market. The presence of a wide range of herbicides in the Kenyan market overwhelms farmers. As a result, they sometimes choose the wrong herbicides, which result in huge losses in their farms. Most farmers have inadequate knowledge of the types and specific applications of herbicides in Kenya. This article discusses the Lumax herbicide, its type, content, uses, how it works, mixing ratio, and its effectiveness.

What is Lumax 537.5 SE?

Lumax is a selective herbicide. It is manufactured by Syngenta Company. In Kenya, it is packaged in 1L and 5 L. It is a broad-spectrum herbicide for both post- and pre-emergence.

Contents and formulation

The following are active ingredients in Lumax 537.5 SE:

  • Terbuthylazine
  • Mesotrione
  • S-metolachlor

125g, 37.5g, and 375g of terbuthylazine, mesotrione, and S-metolachlor respectively, are present in every 1 liter of Lumax 537.5 SE. Terbuthylazine is a residual, contact, and reliable herbicide. On the other hand, mesotrione is a new technology introduced by Syngenta Company. S-metolachlor is the safest and long-lasting acetanilide. Lumax is formulated as Susplo-Emulsifiable (SE).

How Lumax 537.5 (SE) works

Targeted weeds take Lumax’s active ingredient(S-metolachlor) via the shoots or roots. For this reason, the weeds are subdued before they emerge or a few days after they have appeared from the ground. The uptake of the chemicals by the weeds’ shoots is pronounced than in roots. Though, triazine is taken via the roots.

Uses

Lumax 537.5 (SE) controls grasses and annual weeds in sugarcane and maize plantations.

Mixing ratio

Based on the Syngenta company directive, 4 liters of Lumax 537.5 (SE) is used in one hectare of land. This directive makes it difficult for a farmer to come up with an effective mixing ratio in a particular quantity, for instance, in a 20-liters tank. According to the research done by a farmer (See Pictures 1 and 2), 300ml of Lumax is mixed in 20 liters of water for effective action.

Lumax Effectiveness

Lumax is effective in controlling grasses and annual weeds. However, grasses and annual weeds, which Lumax failed to destroy during application emerge after about one month. Therefore, one should reapply Lumax, especially in maize plantations to control weeds throughout the growing period of maize.
